What's left behind the scenes

  • In the fourth season of the series, the character Henry Howard, Earl of Surrey, is depicted as the uncle of the King's fifth wife, Catherine Howard. In reality, he was her cousin.
  • In reality, Brandon's butler was killed by Norfolk's men, whereas in the series, he was killed by Thomas Boleyn's men.
  • In the series, Cardinal Wolsey committed suicide, but in reality, he fell seriously ill on his way to London and died from the disease.
  • In the series, Henry VIII is often referred to as the King of Ireland, but the title of King of Ireland actually only came into existence in 1541. Therefore, during the events depicted in the series, Henry VIII should have been called only the Lord of Ireland.
  • In the series, the cardinal informs Thomas Wolsey of the imminent death of Pope Alexander. There is an error in the name here. In reality, it was Pope Adrian VI who died in 1523, succeeded by Pope Clement VII.
  • In the series, Anne Boleyn was the mistress of Thomas Wyatt. In reality, only one romance of Anne Boleyn is known—with Lord Henry Percy, son of the Duke of Northumberland, an engagement that was broken off not without the assistance of King Henry VIII.
  • The series shows only one illegitimate child of Henry VIII—Henry FitzRoy, who dies in early childhood. In reality, Henry FitzRoy died at the age of 17 from rapid consumption, having previously married Lady Mary Howard, daughter of Thomas Howard, 3rd Duke of Norfolk.
  • Sir Francis Bryan's line to Lady Mary, 'if you were my daughter, I would strike you,' actually belongs to Norfolk.
  • Charles Brandon suppresses Robert Aske's rebellion instead of Norfolk, and leads the conspiracy against Thomas Cromwell in his place.
  • Anita Briem left the project before the start of filming for Season 3. At the insistence of Jonathan Rhys Meyers, her role was offered to actress Annabelle Wallis.
  • Before settling on Joely Richardson, the producers considered offering the role of Catherine Parr to actress Gillian Anderson.
  • Filming for Season 1 took place between June and September 2006.
  • In season 4, during a parliamentary session on December 22, 1545, we see Charles Brandon among those gathered. In reality, he died on August 22, 1545.
  • In the series, starting from season 3, the King is married by Bishop Gardiner of Winchester. This is historically inaccurate. The King was married by Thomas Cranmer, the Archbishop of Canterbury.
  • In the series, Richard Rich uses provocation to obtain a confession from Thomas More that the King cannot be the head of the Church according to Divine Law. Richard Rich served as the star witness for the prosecution at the trial where Thomas More was sentenced to so-called qualified execution (hanging, evisceration, quartering, and beheading), which was replaced by a simple beheading by Henry VIII's decision. In reality, all of this happened to John Fisher.
  • Lady Salisbury was executed after the King's marriage to Catherine Howard, whereas in the series, she is executed while the King is still married to Anne of Cleves.
  • The final role of Simon Ward (1941-2012).
  • All scenes with Peter O'Toole (1932-2013) were filmed within a week.
  • In the series, Catherine Howard finds Sir Francis Bryan so that Charles Brandon can introduce her to the King. In reality, Catherine was found and introduced to the King by her uncle, the Duke of Norfolk.
  • During the filming of the final season, Jonathan Rhys Meyers refused to gain weight or wear fattening costumes to portray the image of an aged and bloated Henry VIII on screen.
  • In the series, the Duke of Norfolk told Charles that his father was executed by Henry VIII's father. In reality, the Duke's father, Thomas Howard, 2nd Duke of Norfolk, died of natural causes in 1524. It was he (and not Thomas Howard, 3rd Duke of Norfolk) who presided over the trial of the Duke of Buckingham in the court of peers in 1521 and passed the death sentence.
