What's left behind the scenes

  • Initially, there was a completely different concept for adapting the Japanese series for American television. The series was planned to be called 'Galactic Ranger,' and it was to feature the following characters: Victor Lee (Red Ranger) — a martial arts master, Zack Taylor (Black Ranger) — a detective, Kimberly Hart (Pink Ranger) — an unskilled aerobics instructor, Billy Cranston (Blue Ranger) — a handsome athlete, and Trini Crystal (Yellow Ranger) — an aspiring writer.
  • Karan Ashley left the series after realizing she could not spend so much time on set. It was initially intended that a final story arc would be written specifically for her, as had happened when Amy Jo Johnson left, but this never occurred. In the 3rd season, her character was turned into a child, and the studio decided that the character's return to the plot could be handled without the actress appearing on screen.
  • In one of the episodes, the numbers 24601 are visible tattooed on Skull's chest. This is a reference to Jean Valjean's prison number in Victor Hugo's (1802-1885) novel 'Les Misérables' (1862). This same number can also be seen in the animated series 'The Simpsons' (1989) and the series 'Twin Peaks' (1990-1991).
  • Tommy Oliver was named after producer Tony Oliver.
  • There are only 7 Power Rangers, yet no more than 6 appear on screen at the same time.
  • Jason Lee Scott was the first to come up with and say the phrase "Back in action!"
  • Amy Jo Johnson, who played Kimberly, and David Yost, who played Billy, had only practiced artistic gymnastics and had no experience in martial arts prior to filming the series. Consequently, they had to be taught the basics of martial arts before filming began. The other actors in the series already possessed some level of martial arts skill.
  • Walter John is missing the middle finger on his left hand. He lost it at the age of 4.
  • Before starting work on the second season, Saban Entertainment considered introducing new Dinozords into the plot. This idea was abandoned after calculating how much it would cost.
  • In the first season and the first 13 episodes of the second, the Power Rangers frequently used Power Blasters in their battles against the monsters of Rita and later Lord Zedd. Complaints began arriving from parents regarding the abundance of violent scenes involving Power Blasters, and as a result, this weapon was used very rarely thereafter, at least in combat. For example, in the third part of the episode "Evil King" in the third season, the Blue Ranger used a Power Blaster to open a secret emergency exit in the Megazord's foot.
  • In case the series was canceled, an alternative ending was filmed for the episode titled "Doomsday" (1993), in which Rita and her minions are locked in a space garbage truck. This is exactly how Rita's story ended in the Japanese television series upon which this American version was based.
  • The Power Rangers are high school students. At the start of the series, Austin St. John was 18 years old. He was the only actor whose age matched that of his character. All other actors playing the Power Rangers were older. The oldest was David Yost, at 24 years old.
  • Richard Stephen Horvitz, the voice of Alpha 5, is the only actor whose character appears in all 155 episodes.
  • Jason David Frank, who played Tommy, was originally intended to be in the series only until the middle of the first season; however, his character's popularity surpassed that of any other Ranger. Fans flooded Saban Entertainment with requests to bring Tommy back, and the company eventually gave in. Tommy returned toward the end of the season and continued to appear in the show. In total, the character appeared in 217 episodes of the project.
  • Zordon was the first to come up with the exclamation "It's morphin time!"
  • After Austin St. John (who played Jason), Walter Jones (Zack), and Thuy Trang (Trini) stopped filming, their dialogue had to be dubbed by other actors who were not credited in the titles. For example, Trini's voice was imitated by an actress named Judy, Jason's voice was provided by producer Paul Rosenthal, and Zack's voice by junior engineer Joel Rogers.
  • Lord Zedd was made less frightening due to complaints received from parents about the character.
  • Filming for the first two seasons of the series took place every day for 16 weeks.
  • In the middle of the second season, Austin St. John, Thuy Trang, and Walter Jones left the project. The show's creators had to reuse footage and scenes featuring these actors, while their lines were dubbed by other cast members. This continued until the time came for the Ranger change, when Steve Cardenas, Karan Ashley, and Johnny Yong Bosch joined the project. St. John later briefly returned to the series to play the Gold Ranger in the Power Rangers Zeo season (1996).
  • In Malaysia, due to an anti-drug campaign, the word 'Morphin' was removed from the series.
  • Ninjor's voice parodies the voice of a character named Dudley from the comedic animated series "The Rocky and Bullwinkle Show" (1959-1964).
  • During the filming of a scene featuring the body-swapping machine, Amy Jo Johnson's and David Yost's costumes caught fire due to flying sparks. After this incident, the actress tried to keep her distance from the device.
  • The Canadian Broadcasting Standards Council concluded that the series violated several rules regarding the depiction of violence in children's programming.
  • Officially, the actors were supposed to be on set from 6:30 AM to 6:30 PM, Monday through Friday. In reality, the Power Rangers performers spent much more time on set. On weekends, they had to record dialogue for battle scenes, and they often didn't return home until late at night.
  • The Command Center shown in the series appeared in the music video for "The Dope Show" by the American industrial rock band Marilyn Manson.
  • David Yost played his character Billy Cranston, the Blue Ranger, longer than any other actor, from 1993 to 1996. Amy Jo Johnson played her character, the Pink Ranger, longer than any of the other women. Her character appeared in a total of 137 episodes.
  • After the fourth season, David Yost left the project, unable to endure the ridicule of those around him regarding his sexual orientation.
  • Early drafts of the script suggested that Tommy would die, just as his counterpart did in the Japanese television series.
