What's left behind the scenes

  • When Eva Habermann was cast as Zeve, she was told that she would have to dye her hair blue for filming because a wig would look unconvincing. During the filming of the first season, the actress's hair was dyed every day using a dye used in the production of marshmallows. Habermann absolutely hated this, as it was damaging to her hair. Two years later, at the start of the second season, the producers finally allowed her to use a wig because she had decided to leave the series due to other projects, and thus she appeared in only two episodes.
  • Initially, Eva Habermann felt embarrassed filming nude scenes, so it was decided to use a body double for the corresponding shots. At first, they tried to find a stripper in Halifax (where the filming took place), but everyone had either piercings or tattoos. Eventually, they found an extra who agreed to undress for close-up shots. Soon, Habermann gained enough courage and self-confidence to perform the topless scenes herself.
  • The chess match in the episode "The Game" is a step-by-step reproduction of a 1834 game between Louis-Charles Mahé de La Bourdonnais (1795-1840) and Alexander McDonnell (1798-1845).
