What's left behind the scenes

  • Producer Simon Farnaby played Julian. This character exhibits traits of several politicians, including Tony Blair, David Cameron, and Boris Johnson (all of whom served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom at one time or another). His death is likely a reference to the passing of Stephen Milligan, a former Conservative Member of Parliament who died in 1994 from autofixiofilia (a form of abnormal sexual activity involving the use of means to restrict oxygen to the lungs and/or brain to enhance sensations associated with sexual release).
  • Simon Farnaby's Julian was originally intended to be portrayed as much more uninhibited—to the extent that such characters are generally not recommended for prime-time television (given the leather straps, mask, and other BDSM accessories).
  • It was initially planned to show hundreds of ghosts inhabiting the house, all played by the same actor. This idea was subsequently abandoned.
  • Lawrence Ricardo played both Robin and Humphrey. If both characters appeared in the same scene, Ricardo played Humphrey, while someone else on set served as Robin's body. In some scenes, only Humphrey's head was required, and Ricardo's torso had to be 'hidden' behind furniture or other characters.
  • The film was shot at West Horsley Place in Surrey, a house with an interesting history. Guy Fawkes (the English Catholic nobleman and most famous participant in the 1605 Gunpowder Plot against King James) once served here.
