What's left behind the scenes

The character 'John Hannibal Smith' is based on a real person, Bo Gritz, an officer of the United States Army Special Forces.
Before being cast in the series, George Peppard (1928-1994) was warned that if he were fired from this project as well, his film career would be over. Peppard was known as an actor who was very difficult to work with, and by the early 1980s, Hollywood producers had grown quite tired of him.
The main characters of the series are Vietnam veterans.
Mr. T and George Peppard did not get along very well. Adding fuel to the fire was the fact that Mr. T became the real star of the series, despite Hannibal's leadership. Furthermore, Peppard was very upset to learn that Mr. T was earning more than he was.
In the first two episodes of Season 1, the role of 'Handsome' was played by actor Tim Danigan. However, the film's management felt he looked too young for the part, and he was replaced by actor Dirk Benedict.
Despite its semi-military focus and action-packed plot, not a single person dies in the series (except for the episodes involving a return to Vietnam). Many film critics noted this fact, and the show was permitted for children to watch.
NBC executives demanded that Murdock be removed from the series, but viewers in preview screenings disagreed, forcing NBC management to back down.
