What's left behind the scenes

  • From the very beginning, director and screenwriter Alfonso Cuarón envisioned only Cate Blanchett in the lead role. He sent her the script for the future series; she read it, agreed to participate in the project, and soon became Cuarón's creative partner. When it came to casting the role of Stephen, it was Blanchett who suggested Kevin Kline, recalling his performance in the comedy A Fish Called Wanda (Charles Crichton and John Cleese, 1988). Cuarón contacted Kline and secured his agreement.
  • The credits of each episode end with the words "Shantih Shantih Shantih" appearing on screen, as Alfonso Cuarón had done in previous works—the sci-fi action film Children of Men (2006) and the drama Roma (2018). Shanti mantras are Hindu prayers for peace found in the Upanishads (ancient religious and philosophical treatises); they conclude with the word "shanti" (meaning "peace") spoken three times in Sanskrit.
