What's left behind the scenes

In January 2024, it was announced that Griselda Blanco's relatives had sued Sofia Vergara for using Blanco's likeness without permission. Griselda's children attempted to obtain a court injunction to prevent the series from being released. Griselda's son, Michael, stated that for 13 years he had given interviews to people who claimed to be gathering information about his mother's life to adapt it into a script and a book. According to Michael, the collected information was offered to a producer who replied that while Netflix was interested in Griselda's story, the gathered material was useless. Michael later claimed that material from his interviews was used in the series anyway, and he received nothing for its use.
In real life, Griselda was indeed merciless and began killing while she was still a child. At the age of 11, she and some youths from Medellín kidnapped a child from a wealthy family and demanded a ransom for his release. When the parents refused, Griselda personally killed the hostage.
During filming, Sofia Vergara wore special facial prosthetics—around her eyes, on her nose, and on her chin. Additionally, she wore fake teeth to better resemble her character. The actress worried that audiences would not take her seriously in a dramatic role.
