What's left behind the scenes
- To a certain extent, Todd Grimson, the author of the novel that served as the literary source for the screenplay, was inspired by vivid dreams he began to experience after being diagnosed with incurable multiple sclerosis.
- All the kittens shown in the series were toy kittens.
- Unlike what is shown on screen, the main character had more cinematic experience in the original novel. She had already co-directed a feature film about Mary Bell (a juvenile British killer) and attended the Seattle International Film Festival, where this film was screened alongside one of her short films.
- A full moon is shown in every episode, regardless of how much time has passed according to the script.
- Catherine Keener came up with the pedicure design (in the form of bird claws) herself.
- According to Jeff Ward, the scene where his character Roy's head is torn off used almost exclusively practical effects (special effects created physically on set or on location). The actor was fitted with rubber prosthetics, and the footage was repeatedly played in reverse with minimal use of CGI.
