What's left behind the scenes
- Laura Lippman's 2019 novel 'The Woman in the Lake' is based on two actual disappearances that occurred in Baltimore in the 1960s. A white girl and a Black woman went missing, and the difference in how the newspapers reacted to these disappearances was colossal. 11-year-old Esther Leibowitz disappeared on September 29, 1969, and her body was found a few days later; this case received extensive press coverage. Shortly before that, in the summer of the same year, Shirley Parker, a 35-year-old African American woman, disappeared; her body was found in a zoo lake on June 2. There was almost no information about this disappearance in the newspapers. In reality, the victims of these crimes had nothing in common, but in Lippman's novel, a certain connection existed.
- Lupita Nyong'o was initially cast as the lead character, but she left the project shortly after filming began and was replaced by Natalie Portman.
