What's left behind the scenes
- Initially, the series was to be titled "Boys," but it was later changed to avoid confusion with the 2019 American series of the same name.
- The show's creator, Russell T. Davies, specifically cast gay actors in gay roles because he was convinced that only they could provide an authentic performance.
- HBO announced that the series would only be aired in the US if a well-known American actor were part of the cast. Consequently, a character played by Neil Patrick Harris appeared in the first episode.
- The series takes place between September 1981 and December 1991.
- The series is set in London, although it was filmed largely in Manchester.
- The character of Jill is based on actress Jill Nelder, an old friend of Russell T. Davies. In the series, she plays Jill's mother. She did indeed live in a shared room with roommates in Hampstead, and "La!" was indeed an exclamation used only within her circle of friends.
