What's left behind the scenes
- The actors in the series spent a great deal of time talking to one another, developing their characters' backstories and personality traits. All of this was done to lend authenticity to their roles.
- According to director Craig Zobel, only Kate Winslet had the strength of will to speak in her normal accent between takes; the other actors preferred to stay in character.
- Guy Pearce first arrived on set on March 12, 2020, just one day before filming was put on hold. During the quarantine, he lived with Kate Winslet. Winslet had fallen in love with Pearce as a child after seeing him in the series 'Neighbours' (1985).
- To get into character, Kate Winslet spent several months communicating closely with Pennsylvania state detectives.
- Kate Winslet, who played the lead role and served as executive producer, insisted on total equality during filming and practically mentored the novice actors. In her pursuit of equality for everyone in every respect, she even refused a trailer that was larger than those provided to the rest of the crew.
- HBO executives were initially skeptical about the project when it became clear that the main character would appear without makeup and with unwashed hair, and would possess some rather unpleasant personality traits; however, Kate Winslet insisted on portraying her heroine exactly as she was, without embellishment.
- The role proved to be so emotionally taxing for Kate Winslet that she couldn't even be in the same room as Cody Costock, who played her deceased son, Kevin. While preparing for the part, she spoke extensively with psychotherapists and couples who had lost children. The actress constantly had to remind her own children that it was all just a role in a movie and not something happening to her in reality.
- Filming some scenes required a large number of extras, which in turn required locations capable of accommodating so many people. Therefore, these scenes were filmed, among other places, in an abandoned store, a funeral home, and a gym.
- All seven episodes were filmed at the same time. Craig Zobel had to constantly check the script to avoid confusing which part of the plot was being filmed and exactly what each character knew at that moment. When work stalled due to the coronavirus epidemic, much of the script had to be rewritten to reduce the number of people on set.
