What's left behind the scenes

Eiichiro Oda, the series creator and executive producer, worked closely with the directors and writers to ensure they did not deviate from his vision for the entire project.
A significant number of the ships, including the pirate vessels, were built in Cape Town, where the filming took place.
According to executive producer Steven Maeda, Mackenyu (full name Mackenyu Maeda, who played Zoro) moved so quickly that the stunt performers on set could not keep up with him.
Showrunner Matt Owens and Emily Rudd had been close friends long before this project. At one time, it was Owens who recommended the original manga to Rudd and stated that he would approach Netflix with a proposal for an adaptation. Rudd liked the idea and began pursuing a role in the series. When casting began, Owens offered the part to Rudd, and she landed the role of Nami.
When Mackenyu was first offered the chance to audition for the role of Zoro, he was filming in Budapest. He had been told in advance not to agree to screen tests during filming, so he declined the offer because he wasn't told exactly where this Zoro would be appearing. When the offer was made a second time, he already suspected it might be the One Piece project, and upon confirming that it was, he immediately agreed.
