What's left behind the scenes

  • The actress playing the lead role, Rebecca Bridges, mentioned in an interview that in her portrayal of Clarice Starling, she tried to use Jodie Foster's manner of speaking from Jonathan Demme's thriller 'The Silence of the Lambs' (1990).
  • The action of this series unfolds after the events depicted in the 1991 film, but Dr. Hannibal Lecter is never mentioned by name anywhere in the series because the rights to this character are owned by another production company. The rights to Thomas Harris's 1981 novel 'Red Dragon' and other works by the author belong to De Laurentis Films and the NBC network, which broadcast the series 'Hannibal' (2013-2015), while the CBS network acquired the rights only to 'The Silence of the Lambs', Harris's second novel about the serial killer Lecter, published in 1988.
  • Jen Richards began her work on the series as a consultant, and she was not cast as Julia Lawson immediately. The character nicknamed Buffalo Bill, played by Simon Northwood, from the 1990 film, is a vivid example of the fictional trope of the 'bloodthirsty transgender' (a trope is a stylistic figure, word, or expression used in a figurative sense to enhance the imagery of language and the artistic expressiveness of speech). Nevertheless, Lecter explicitly states in the film that Buffalo Bill is not a real transgender person, but only believes himself to be one due to a severe identity disorder. In any case, the filmmakers hoped to correct the negative impact of this movie (as well as many others) on the societal perception of transgender people. Julia's speech regarding society's attitude toward transgender people in light of the Buffalo Bill case serves as a response to the criticism of 'The Silence of the Lambs', whether justified or underserved.
