Short description
In the late 21st century, a subculture of humans have emerged who have been modified genetically by a vampire-like disease, giving them enhanced speed, incredible stamina and acute intelligence. As they are set apart from "normal" and "healthy" humans, the world is pushed to the brink of worldwide civil war aimed at the destruction of the "diseased" population. In the middle of this crossed-fire is - an infected woman - Ultraviolet, who finds herself protecting a nine-year-old boy who has been marked for death by the human government as he is believed to be a threat to humans.
What's left behind the scenes
- The director's vision was based on a desire to retell John Cassavetes' classic thriller 'Gloria' (1980) in the style of a comic book-inspired adventure action film. The plot of 'Gloria' revolved around a beautiful and skilled woman with weapons who saves a six-year-old boy from the mafia hunting him.
- The DVD release of the film had a runtime of 94 minutes, compared to 88 minutes for the PG-13 theatrical release.
- Against director Kurt Wimmer's wishes, the film was completely re-edited by the studio, whose management was dissatisfied with the original version. They believed the film was too emotional for an action movie, and the subsequent new edit placed greater emphasis on tense scenes, also making it possible to receive a PG-13 rating. The film's duration was reduced from 120 to 88 minutes.
- The third force between humans and hemophages consists of those of Chinese descent.
- The film features advertising for BMW motorcycles.
- Filming took place from February 9th to July 15th, 2004, in China, primarily in Shanghai and Hong Kong.
- At the beginning of the filming process, the director asked Milla Jovovich to hit him to get a real sense of the force of her strikes. For the next several days, Kurt Wimmer had to direct the filming with a large bruise under his eye.
