Short description

Austrian mountaineer, Heinrich Harrer journeys to the Himalayas without his family to head an expedition in 1939. But when World War II breaks out, the arrogant Harrer falls into Allied forces' hands as a prisoner of war. He escapes with a fellow detainee and makes his way to Llaso, Tibet, where he meets the 14-year-old Dalai Lama, whose friendship ultimately transforms his outlook on life.

What's left behind the scenes

  • During the scene of the altercation between Heinrich and Ngawang, the director intentionally did not warn actor B.D. Wong that his character was supposed to be pushed into the mud. When Pitt did what was required of him, Wong, as expected, became furious.
  • The film's director, Jean-Jacques Annaud, sent a crew to Tibet to shoot footage. Ultimately, approximately 20 minutes of material filmed there was included in the film. This information was kept strictly confidential. The filming was done in secret, and no one knew about it until the summer of 1999.
  • Brad Pitt's Austrian accent ranked third in Empire magazine's list of worst movie accents.
  • After Brad Pitt and David Thewlis starred in this film, they were banned from entering China.
  • Jetsun Pema, who starred in this film, is the Dalai Lama's sister. In the film, she played his mother, and therefore also her own mother.
