Each actor was given a book that best matched the character they were playing. Kiersi Clemons received the memoir "Just Kids" by singer and poet Patti Smith. Callum Turner received a collection of essays by David Foster Wallace (1962-2008). Pierce Brosnan received fiction from The New Yorker, Jeff Bridges received the New York Atlas newspaper, and Kate Beckinsale received Leo Tolstoy’s (1828-1910) novel "Anna Karenina".
Before Kate Beckinsale was cast in the lead role, the part was initially intended for Olivia Wilde, and then Rosamund Pike. The male lead was played by Callum Turner, although Logan Lerman and Miles Teller had been considered for the role before him.
