Countless wiseguy films are spoofed in this film that centers on the neuroses and angst of a powerful Mafia racketeer who suffers from panic attacks. When Paul Vitti needs help dealing with his role in the "family," unlucky shrink Dr. Ben Sobel is given just days to resolve Vitti's emotional crisis and turn him into a happy, well-adjusted gangster.
What's left behind the scenes
- All the restaurants shown in the film were once the sites of gangland meetings, with the exception of Sparks Steak House, where the meeting took place on the street in front of it.
- In an effort to achieve maximum authenticity, Robert De Niro and Harold Ramis scouted for people to film on the streets of Little Italy in New York.
- The prison scenes were filmed at Sing Sing, a maximum-security prison. Actual inmates from the prison’s drama club were used as extras in these scenes.
