Short description

John Smith is a mysterious stranger who is drawn into a vicious war between two Prohibition-era gangs. In a dangerous game, he switches allegiances from one to another, offering his services to the highest bidder. As the death toll mounts, Smith takes the law into his own hands in a deadly race to stay alive.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The film was banned from release in Malaysia.
  • Walter Hill's original director's cut lasted over two hours. Before Hill settled on the final version that was released, many scenes were used to create trailers, which is why they contain so much material not included in the theatrical release – including alternate takes of some scenes, scenes edited differently, some additional lines, and elements from cut scenes (such as a shootout) and an alternative ending.
  • Filming took place from September 11th to December 1995.
