Short description

England, 1600. Queen Elizabeth I promises Orlando, a young nobleman obsessed with poetry, that she will grant him land and fortune if he agrees to satisfy a very particular request.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Jessica Swinton, who played Orlando's daughter, is Tilda Swinton's niece.
  • The film is divided into 7 thematic parts, and in each new part, the eyes of Tilda Swinton's character change color.
  • The desert scene featuring Orlando and the character played by Lothar Blueth is based on a true story. Sally Potter organized a banquet in the desert to persuade the local Russian authorities to grant permission to use a nearby castle for filming. During the banquet, guests were offered Russian drinks, but none of the film crew were willing to drink them undiluted.
  • Sally Potter and Tilda Swinton began working on the project even before the script was written. They worked together for 5 years before filming actually began.
