Tells the story of Rainbow Randolph, the corrupt, costumed star of a popular children's TV show, who is fired over a bribery scandal and replaced by squeaky-clean Smoochy, a puffy fuchsia rhinoceros. As Smoochy catapults to fame - scoring hit ratings and the affections of a network executive - Randolph makes the unsuspecting rhino the target of his numerous outrageous attempts to exact revenge and reclaim his status as America's sweetheart.
What's left behind the scenes
- A photograph of a rhinoceros hangs on the wall in Sheldon's house (played by Edward Norton). After filming ended, the actor took the photo and hung it in his own home.
- Hank Azaria was initially cast in one of the roles, but he soon left the project to film Joe Roth's comedy "America's Sweethearts" (2001) and was replaced by Jon Stewart.
- The film was financed by the British company FilmFour. The film's box office failure led the company to bankruptcy.
- According to Edward Norton, Danny DeVito approached him with an offer to appear in the film while in Montreal, where Norton was filming Frank Oz's thriller 'Arthur's Gold' (2001) and DeVito was filming the thriller 'The Big Divide' (David Mamet, 2001). DeVito offered him the role of Rainbow Ranfold, which was eventually played by Robin Williams. However, after reading the script, Norton asked for the opportunity to play Smoochy instead.
- Robin Williams, who played Rainbow Ranfold, was friends with director Danny DeVito and his wife Rhea Perlman. He had long dreamed of working with DeVito. When Jim Carrey declined to work with DeVito in order to film Frank Darabont's romantic drama 'Majestic' (2001), DeVito offered the role to Williams.
- When Edward Norton's character dances on a park bench in Manhattan, the North Tower of the World Trade Center is visible in the frame.
