Short description
Widowed U.S. president Andrew Shepherd, one of the world's most powerful men, can have anything he wants -- and what he covets most is Sydney Ellen Wade, a Washington lobbyist. But Shepherd's attempts at courting her spark wild rumors and decimate his approval ratings.
What's left behind the scenes
- During one of his many visits to the White House, director Rob Reiner spent two consecutive days with Bill Clinton (the 42nd US president), literally following him everywhere.
- Michael J. Fox remained silent about his Parkinson's disease until filming began, fearing that the role of the president's domestic policy advisor would be given to another actor. During screen tests and medical exams, Fox constantly worried that someone would notice his left hand shaking and diagnose the condition. Fortunately, the actor took his prescribed tremor medication on time, so the medical exam only showed an increased heart rate and high blood pressure.

- Robert Redford was initially cast in the lead role, but he had a falling out with director Rob Reiner and was replaced by Michael Douglas. Redford remained a producer.
- Neither the public nor the media are allowed onto the grounds of Camp David, the American presidents' country residence, so the artist Lilly Kilvert had to use personal photographs from someone's private archive of the 'Nixon era' when working on the set decorations, and complete the rest herself.
- Michael Douglas is actually related (albeit distantly) to several US presidents – Richard Nixon (1913-1994) and both Bushes (1924-2018 and 1946-).
- Initially, Robert Redford was cast as the lead character, but after a falling out with director Rob Reiner, he was replaced by Michael Douglas. Redford remained as a producer.
