- For this film, director Georg Wilhelm Pabst (1885-1967) requested actress Louise Brooks (1906-1985) from 'Paramount Pictures,' but was refused, and Pabst was forced to film with Marlene Dietrich (1901-1992). Meanwhile, a scandal erupted between Brooks and the studio over her fees; the studio flatly refused to increase her salary, Brooks broke her contract with the studio and immediately contacted Pabst to inform him that she agreed to star instead of Dietrich.
