What's left behind the scenes

As a rule, Neil Simon (1927-2018) wrote plays that he then adapted into screenplays. In this case, he wrote directly with a film adaptation in mind, understanding that a stage production would be difficult to realize due to the large number of locations.
The house featured in the film also appeared in Charles Shyer’s comedies “Father of the Bride” (1991) and “Father of the Bride Part II” (1995), which also starred Steve Martin.
This is the second film based on a screenplay by Neil Simon starring Steve Martin. The first was Arthur Hiller’s (1923-2016) comedy “Lonely Guy” (1984).
