Short description

After getting into a serious car accident, a TV director discovers an underground sub-culture of scarred, omnisexual car-crash victims who use car accidents and the raw sexual energy they produce to try to rejuvenate his sex life with his wife.

What's left behind the scenes

  • David Cronenberg’s agent predicted that this scandalous film would ruin his career.
  • Cronenberg insisted that the entire film was shot within a half-hour drive of his home in Toronto.
  • Five "Lincolns" were needed for filming – three for driving, one for complete destruction, and another to cut in half and install filming equipment inside.
  • The film featured erotic scenes between Ballard and the secretary; Cronenberg cut them, believing that the actors already had amazing 'chemistry' and shouldn't have it undermined by side relationships.
  • The film is based on the novel of the same name by British science fiction writer J.G. Ballard.
  • In 'Crash,' David Cronenberg recreated the accident in which James Dean died.
  • The role of Vaughn was offered to Australian actor Michael Hutchence, who died a year and a half after the film's premiere.
  • The film was banned in some countries, and its screening in the United Kingdom was strictly limited.
  • Vona’s phrase – “A car crash is a productive, not destructive event” – is a direct quote from Ballard’s other novel, ‘Crash’, which was published in 1970, three years before ‘Crash’.
