After India Stoker's father dies, her Uncle Charlie, who she never knew existed, comes to live with her and her unstable mother. She comes to suspect this mysterious, charming man has ulterior motives and becomes increasingly infatuated with him.

- Composers Philip Glass and Clint Mansell collaborated on developing the film's soundtrack: Mansell wrote the main soundtrack, and Glass wrote the melody played by India and Charlie on the piano.
- Wentworth Miller revealed in an interview that he pictured Matthew Goode as Charles Stoker when writing the screenplay.
- Alfred Hitchcock's film 'Shadow of a Doubt' (1943) served as inspiration for Wentworth Miller in writing the screenplay.
- Jodie Foster and Carey Mulligan were chosen for roles in this film, but both declined, and Mia Wasikowska and Nicole Kidman took their place.
