Short description
The film tells a story of a divorced couple trying to raise their young son. The story follows the boy for twelve years, from first grade at age 6 through 12th grade at age 17-18, and examines his relationship with his parents as he grows.

- Filming began in the summer of 2002 at the home of the film's director and screenwriter, Richard Linklater, in Austin, Texas.
- Ellar Coltrane, who played the main role, was 7 years old at the beginning of filming and 18 at the end.
- By agreement, if Richard Linklater had died during the 12-year filming process, Ethan Hawke would have taken over the directorial duties.
- The total number of filming days was 45. Filming took place from May 2002 to August 2013.
- Richard Linklater cast his daughter, Lorelei Linklater, in the role of the main character's sister. During the lengthy filming process, Lorelei lost interest in the project and asked her father to remove her character from the plot. Removing the character contradicted the director's plans, but everything worked out – Lorelei agreed to continue filming until the end.
