Short description
When a doctor decides to carry out an AIDS prevention program inside Latin America’s largest prison: the Casa de Detenção de São Paulo – Carandiru, he meets the future victims of one of the darkest days in Brazilian history.
What's left behind the scenes
- The creation of the painting took three years.
- The author of the book, which became the literary source for the screenplay, Drauzio Varella, treated a patient who turned out to be Hector Babenco (1946-2016). Babenco recovered and became the director of the book's adaptation.
- The actual 'Carandiru' prison was demolished in 2002, with plans to build a park in its place. One block of the prison was left untouched and turned into a museum.
