Set on an island off the coast of New England in the summer of 1965, Moonrise Kingdom tells the story of two twelve-year-olds who fall in love, make a secret pact, and run away together into the wilderness. As various authorities try to hunt them down, a violent storm is brewing off-shore – and the peaceful island community is turned upside down in more ways than anyone can handle.
What's left behind the scenes
- A Quantum Sails logo is visible on the sail of the sailboat. Quantum was founded only in 1996.
- An abandoned Linens 'n Things store outside of Newport, Rhode Island, was used as a sound recording pavilion for the film.
- The map of New Penzance Island was created based on Fisher Island, New York.
- The wrecked Volkswagen Beetle from 1971 or 1972 shown near the end of the film, despite the movie being set in 1965.
- Most of Wes Anderson's classmates who were scouts were in 'Troop 55'.
- To find a filming location, the film's director used Google Earth due to a crisis of ideas.
- 1960s camping equipment does not include fluorescent lanterns or nylon tents, especially self-supporting models on flexible poles.
- This is the first Wes Anderson film shot in a 1.85:1 aspect ratio since 'Bottle Rocket' (1995), and also the first he has shot on 16mm film.
- When Sam and Suzy listen to Françoise Hardy's record on the beach, the record she shows Sam – “The «Yeh-Yeh» Girl From Paris!” – was released in 1966 by Four Corners Records. This was the American version of Françoise Hardy’s first album, released in France in 1962 on the Vogue label. The film’s events take place in 1965, so the Vogue version should have been shown.
- The interior of Suzy’s house, as well as many of the buildings in the film, were taken from the natural landmark ‘Thousand Islands’.
- A 1968 Dodge sometimes appears as the island police car, and sometimes a 1969 Dodge. The film is set in 1965.
- When Sam and Suzy play Françoise Hardy's record on the beach, a Capitol Records building is visible. However, Françoise's recordings from the time of “Le temps de l`amour” were released by Vogue.
- In the film, Laura Bishop (Frances McDormand) shouts at various family members through a megaphone. The idea came from the childhood of screenwriter Roman Coppola. His mother, Eleanor, used a megaphone in a similar way.
- When the 'Command Tent' is flooded at the Lebanon camp, and lightning strikes a nearby pole, the equipment used to tilt it is clearly visible at the base of the pole.
- While Ben is talking to Sam and Suzy as they walk around the camp, a Boy Scout marching in the background can be seen waving at the camera.
- The earrings Sam gives to Suzy are made from iridescent greenish-blue beetles called Jewel Beetles. They are found throughout North America and inhabit humid, wooded areas.
- Prior to filming, neither Kara Hayward nor Jared Gilman had ever seen a typewriter in person. Hayward later said: "Fran (Frances McDormand) was very amused by this machine. She couldn't believe it. She pointed out to me that the keys are arranged the same way as they are now (on a computer)."
- The film was a discovery at the 65th Cannes Film Festival in 2012.
- According to Wes Anderson, the fact that Suzy found a pamphlet titled 'Dealing with a Difficult Child' was based on a similar instance from his childhood: "There was nothing frightening about it. The only thing was, I was very surprised when I found it. And I immediately knew who that difficult child was, although hypothetically it could have been someone else."
- During filming, Wes Anderson rented an old mansion in Newport, Rhode Island, for himself, editor Andrew Weisblum, and cinematographer Robert D. Yeoman, in which they had a room equipped for editing the film. The actors were housed in a nearby hotel, but eventually some of them decided to move into the mansion, including Edward Norton, Bill Murray, and Jason Schwartzman. Murray later joked that the idea was to have everyone on hand so they could all work from early in the morning.
- The film premiered in only 4 cinemas, two in New York and two in Los Angeles, but still grossed $167,250 per screening, setting a record for box office revenue per theater for a feature film.
