Short description
Four tales unfold in the Eternal City: While vacationing in Rome, architect John encounters a young man whose romantic woes remind him of a painful incident from his own youth; retired opera director Jerry discovers a mortician with an amazing voice, and he seizes the opportunity to rejuvenate his own flagging career; a young couple have separate romantic interludes; a spotlight shines on an ordinary man.
What's left behind the scenes
- When Leopoldo leaves the house and goes to work, he approaches his car with its front wheels turned to the right. He parks the car at home, and when he returns, the wheels are turned to the left.
- Roberto Benigni's first appearance in a major American release since 'Pinocchio' (2002) and only the second since he won an Oscar for 'Life is Beautiful' (1997). It is also his first appearance since 'Son of the Pink Panther' (1993) in a film produced and directed by Americans.
- Before the scene with Jerry and Phyllis on the plane, just before landing in Rome, there is a shot showing the plane from the outside. It reveals that they are flying on an Alitalia Livery Boeing 787 Dreamliner. This airline does not operate aircraft of this model.
- At the beginning of the film, Roberto Benigni is portrayed as a typical middle-class Roman, but throughout the film he speaks with a Florentine accent, which is markedly different from the Roman one.
- Noomi Rapace was considered for the role that Penelope Cruz ultimately received.
- Woody Allen's first acting role in five films he directed and six years. His previous role was in 'Scoop' (2006).
- Initially, the film was titled The Bop Decameron, before being changed to Nero Fiddle. Woody Allen altered it when he realized few would notice the connection to a collection of novellas called “The Decameron.”
- Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Robert Pattinson auditioned for a role in the film.
- When Leopoldo and his wife are walking down the street near the coffee shop, the same extras pass by in the background several times.
- When Antonio calls Millie, the ringtone in the receiver is American. In Italy, this tone is different.
- Woody Allen's first anthology film since 'New York Stories' (1989), for which he contributed the segment 'Oedipus Wrecks'. It is also the first anthology in forty years directed solely by Allen from start to finish (since 'Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex But Were Afraid to Ask', 1972).
