- Olivia Wilde was originally slated to play the lead role, but left the project due to a busy schedule.
- James Franco was offered the role of Chuck Traynor before Peter Sarsgaard was cast. Franco later took on an episodic role as Hugh Hefner.
- Demi Moore was initially cast as Gloria Steinem, but was forced to leave the project due to health issues. Mary-Louise Parker was considered as a replacement, but Sarah Jessica Parker was brought in instead, agreeing to the role a week before filming ended, though her scenes did not make the final cut.
