Short description

Set more than a decade after the events of the first film, learn the story of the Sully family (Jake, Neytiri, and their kids), the trouble that follows them, the lengths they go to keep each other safe, the battles they fight to stay alive, and the tragedies they endure.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Two water tanks were built at Manhattan Beach Studios. The second was larger – with a volume of just over 956,352 liters. The tank had built-in units for creating waves and currents. Cameras were installed around its perimeter for filming, as well as cameras that monitored the people in the tank. The surface of the water was covered with floating white balls to eliminate glare.
  • Kate Winslet held her breath underwater for 7 minutes and 14 seconds, thus surpassing Tom Cruise’s record underwater filming time (6 minutes) in the action film “Mission: Impossible – Fallout”.
  • Cameron rented the MBS Media Campus (formerly Manhattan Beach Studios) in Southern California for the film shoot for a period of 5 years. Characteristic features of this site are an “aggressive” water conservation program, the use of environmentally friendly cleaning products and paints, and a number of other “green” programs. Cameron intends to install solar panels in the studio and shoot both films using solar energy. The cost of installing the corresponding equipment will be $5 million for the director.
  • According to director James Cameron, Kate Winslet performed all of the underwater stunts herself.
  • James Horner was originally supposed to compose the music for the film, but he tragically died.
