After kidnapping a father and his two kids, the Gecko brothers head south to a seedy Mexican bar to hide out in safety, unaware of its notorious vampire clientele.
What's left behind the scenes
- The Sex Machine's (Tom Savini) pistol can be seen in the Musician's holster in the film "Desperado".
- In the first version of the script, the entire Fuller family and the Gecko brothers survived, however Tarantino rewrote the script, believing that the film would be more exciting if the main characters died.
- The role of the bandit at the end of the film, played by Cheech Marin, could have gone to Erik Estrada.
- The band playing in the bar is Tito & Tarantula.
- The role of Seth Gecko could have gone to Tim Roth, John Travolta, Michael Madsen, Steve Buscemi and Christopher Walken. All of these actors were willing to play the character, but were unable to due to commitments to other projects.
- The fictional beer brand Chango can be noticed in various scenes of the film. The same beer appears in other Robert Rodriguez films – "Desperado" and "Sin City".
- Originally, Quentin Tarantino was supposed to direct the film, but he decided not to take the director's chair in order to focus on the screenplay and his role.
- The film's title was borrowed from drive-in movie theater signs. A "From Dusk Till Dawn" sign indicated a nighttime continuous showing.
- William Sadler was originally cast to play FBI agent Stanley Chase.
- According to the DVD bonuses, in the scene where Sex Machine beats everyone around him, Tom Savini genuinely hit a number of stuntmen and actors, including George Clooney.
- In real life, Salma Hayek hates snakes.
- The phrase "No, thank you, I've been married" was improvised by George Clooney. Robert Rodriguez did not intend to include it in the final version of the film, however, after the studio added the moment to the film's trailer, the director had to leave the phrase in.
- The bar set was built in the California desert.
- Initially, Sex Machine was supposed to be a muscular man with scars wearing a leather biker vest, while Frost was envisioned as thinner and a more "slippery" type. In the film, the characters' traits were swapped.
- Tim Roth and Steve Buscemi both wanted to play Pete Bottoms, but were unable to due to commitments to other projects.
- The dialogue between Kate and Seth before the final vampire attack is a nearly verbatim reproduction of a scene from "Assault on Precinct 13." Scott Fuller is also wearing a t-shirt with the inscription “Precinct 13.”
- The Fuller family received their surname in honor of director Samuel Fuller.
- The filmmakers intentionally colored the vampires' blood green to avoid issues with the ratings board.
- Salma Hayek did not have a choreographer for the dance.
