Short description
A man narrates stories of his life as a 10-year-old boy in 1969 Houston, weaving tales of nostalgia with a fantastical account of a journey to the moon.
What's left behind the scenes
- Some scenes and episodes of the film were shot in front of a green screen, and then during post-production, all objects that the characters did not interact with, or did not touch, were animated. Some scenes and episodes with natural movement were subsequently animated in post-production using a rotoscoping-like method that Linklater had already used when working on 'Waking Life' in 2001 and 'A Scanner Darkly' in 2006.
- Richard Linklater initially intended to shoot the film with natural movement, but ultimately preferred animation. The decision proved controversial, as the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences initially refused to include the film on the shortlist for the 2023 'Oscar' in the 'Best Animated Feature' category in July 2022, and only revised its decision in early January 2023 under public pressure.
- Jack Black, who voiced the older Stan, has had a certain (albeit indirect) connection to NASA since birth. His mother was pregnant with Jack while she was working at NASA.
- Richard Linklater initially intended to shoot a live-action film, but ultimately opted for animation. This decision proved controversial, as the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences refused to include the film on the 2023 Oscar shortlist for Best Animated Feature in July 2022, only reversing its decision in early January 2023 under public pressure.
