Short description

Repulsed by the hypocrisy of adults and the irresponsibility of society, a boy refuses to grow older after his third birthday.

What's left behind the scenes

  • David Bennent (who played Oskar Matzerath) grew very slowly. In this film, he starred at the age of 11 and was 1 meter 14 centimeters tall. He continued to grow until he reached a height of 1 meter 55 centimeters. Growth continued even after he was over 30 years old.
  • For the long version of the film, restored in 2010, it was necessary to re-contact the actors to re-record their lines in some scenes, the sound design of which had been lost.
  • Initially, the film was banned by censorship in Ireland. However, the filmmakers appealed this decision, and in 1981 the film was released.
