- Richard Montañez claimed to have invented Flamin' Hot Cheetos, but this claim is disputed. According to the Los Angeles Times, the chips were created by a team of specialists led by Lynn Greenfield at Frito-Lay headquarters in Plano, Texas, to compete with spicy chips popular in the Middle East. Furthermore, Roger Enrico became the head of Frito-Lay only in 1991, after the brand had already been developed and launched. According to Enrico’s secretary, a phone call between Montañez and Enrico, in which Montañez praised Flamin’ Hot Popcorn, took place in 1993, two years after Flamin' Hot Cheetos appeared on the market. However, Frito-Lay confirmed that Montañez did develop several successful products for the Latin American market.
