Short description
A soldier and member of the Dutch resistance investigates stolen art in the wake of the Second World War, including a Vermeer sold to the Nazis by a flamboyant forger.
What's left behind the scenes
- Filming took place in the United Kingdom and the Netherlands.
- Han van Meegeren (1889-1947) convincingly proved that all the "alleged Vermeer masterpieces" (Dutch painter Jan Vermeer, 1632-1675) were in fact forgeries, and he was convicted of forgery and fraud, crimes far less serious than collaboration with the enemy. He was sentenced to one year in prison, not the death penalty.
