Short description
Two families, abolitionist Northerners the Stonemans and Southern landowners the Camerons, intertwine. When Confederate colonel Ben Cameron is captured in battle, nurse Elsie Stoneman petitions for his pardon. In Reconstruction-era South Carolina, Cameron founds the Ku Klux Klan, battling Elsie's congressman father and his African-American protégé, Silas Lynch.
What's left behind the scenes
- The film is based on the novel and play by Thomas F. Dixon Jr., "The Clansman" (1905).
- Many roles of Black characters were played by white actors who were made up to appear as Black (actor D. Sigman played the role of the mulatto Silas Lynch).
- The film was banned by censorship in France. In Paris, it was only shown in 1921 in an altered version.
- President Wilson ordered a screening of the film at the White House during one of his sessions, to which many statesmen and diplomats with their families were invited.
