Short description
Neil is torn between two loves: Marina, the European woman who comes to the United States to be with him, and Jane, the old flame from his hometown he reconnects with. Neil’s doubts about his life and loves are reflected in the crisis of faith experienced by Father Quintana, who only sees pain and the loss of hope in the world.
What's left behind the scenes
- Olga Kurylenko, familiar with Terrence Malick's habit of completely cutting characters from his films, made him promise that nothing of the sort would happen to her character.
- To get a role in the film, Rachel McAdams lied about having an allergy to horsehair.
- Christian Bale was originally planned to star in the film, but he dropped out of the project and was replaced by Ben Affleck.
- The film's premiere at the Venice Film Festival was accompanied by catcalls.
- The script wasn't used during filming. Before the start of each shooting day, Terrence Malick simply handed the actors sheets of paper containing his thoughts and ideas (regarding the scenes to be played) and asked them to portray emotions – without words, only through movements and gestures.
