The film is partially based on the 2017 Congressional election in Georgia, where Democrats and Republicans, as well as their support groups, spent over $55 million on the election in total. These were the most expensive Congressional elections in US history.
During breaks in filming, screenwriter John Stewart and Steve Carell would go to the local residents gathered near the set, tell jokes, sign autographs, and take pictures with anyone who wanted them.
