Long ago, in the fantasy world of Kumandra, humans and dragons lived together in harmony. But when an evil force threatened the land, the dragons sacrificed themselves to save humanity. Now, 500 years later, that same evil has returned and it’s up to a lone warrior, Raya, to track down the legendary last dragon to restore the fractured land and its divided people.
What's left behind the scenes
- The plot required the protagonist to have some form of transportation, and thus Tuk-Tuk was invented. This is a hybrid animal capable of curling into a ball and riding under a saddle. In Thailand, this is what a vehicle in large cities like Bangkok is called.
- In Indonesian, "raya" means great. In Malay, the word means hibiscus, which is the national flower of Malaysia.
- Raiya's fighting style with two sticks is based on the Filipino martial art of Pekiti-Tirsia Kali.
- The land of Kumandra combines features of countries in Southeast Asia: Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Myanmar, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Laos.
- Raya is the third Disney princess after Merida and Moana whose image is original and not based on fairy tales and legends. Unlike films about other Disney princesses, these three cases do not feature a romantic subplot.
- The Tuk-Tuk is named after the Thai vehicle.
