14-year-old Arrietty and the rest of the Clock family live in peaceful anonymity as they make their own home from items "borrowed" from the house's human inhabitants. However, life changes for the Clocks when a human boy discovers Arrietty.
What's left behind the scenes
- The founders of Studio Ghibli, Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata, had been considering the possibility of adapting Mary Norton's novella for 40 years.
- The working title of the animated film was "Chiisana Arrietty" ("The Little Arrietty").
- Mary Norton's novella was awarded the Carnegie Medal, the most prestigious annual British award for children's literature. In 2007, the awarding body, the British union of information and library workers, named it one of the ten most valuable works of children's literature from the past 70 years.
- The directorial position was entrusted to one of the studio's leading animators, Hiromasa Yonebayashi, who became the youngest director in the history of Studio Ghibli.
