Short description

At the end of the 22nd century Alisa Seleznyova, her father Professor Seleznyov and pilot Zelyony go on a space expedition to find rare animals for Moscow Zoo. On the way they seem to encounter a mysterious conspiracy led by Doctor Verhovtsev against legendary Two Captains Kim and Buran. The only clue is a talking bird Сhatterer [Govorun] that our heroes accidentally took possession of.

What's left behind the scenes

It was only because Roman Kachanov was a star at 'Soyuzmultfilm' and the author of a series of cartoons about Cheburashka that he was allowed to make a feature-length animated film. For an ordinary director, this would have been practically impossible.
Artist Natalia Orlova drew Alice Selezneva based on her daughter – the future famous actress Ekaterina Semenova.
Sixteen years after the cartoon was released, Kir Bulychev wrote a story of the same name for younger children, which he published in 1997.
Only after 'The Mystery of the Third Planet' was released did the Institute of Oriental Studies discover who was hiding behind the pseudonym Kir Bulychev. Having published his first story in 1961, the writer feared for over twenty years that he might be fired for such an unserious pursuit for a research fellow.

The production of the film lasted 4 years.
'The Mystery of the Third Planet' was sold for foreign distribution and had a good success there. In the USA, Alice was voiced by Kirsten Dunst, and Gluv was voiced by James Belushi.
Artist Natalia Orlova lived in the same apartment building as Kir Bulychev, and the writer served as the prototype for the character of Captain Green.
