Short description
JJ, aka John Shaft Jr., may be a cyber security expert with a degree from MIT, but to uncover the truth behind his best friend’s untimely death, he needs an education only his dad can provide. Absent throughout JJ’s youth, the legendary locked-and-loaded John Shaft agrees to help his progeny navigate Harlem’s heroin-infested underbelly.
What's left behind the scenes
- The age difference between Richard Roundtree (who played Shaft Sr.) and Samuel L. Jackson (who played John Shaft) is only 6 years. In one episode, Roundtree's character asks with a laugh: “What the hell makes you look 20 years older than me?”
- At one point, Samuel L. Jackson's character tells his son that he has an L.T. ring. This refers to Lawrence Taylor, a former National Football League linebacker. This remark is a reference to John Singleton's thriller “Shaft” (2000), which starred both Jackson and Taylor (although he played not himself, but Lamont).
- The film explains that Shaft Sr. (played by Richard Roundtree) only pretended to be the uncle of Samuel L. Jackson's character, but was actually his father. Jackson later asks Roundtree if he remembers telling Jackson he was his uncle.
