A sexagenarian South Korean woman enrolls in a poetry class as she grapples with her faltering memory and her grandson's appalling wrongdoing.

What's left behind the scenes

Director Lee Chang-dong drew the idea for the film from real life, when a group of teenagers in a small town raped a peer. The director heard about this, but did not want to make a film based on real events. Soon, during a trip to Japan, he saw a relaxation program on television, and the outlines of the future film began to form in his mind. "I suddenly remembered that crime, the word 'poetry' appeared in my thoughts, and the image of a 60-year-old woman."
