Short description

Outlaw Jesse James is rumored to be the 'fastest gun in the West'. An eager recruit into James' notorious gang, Robert Ford eventually grows jealous of the famed outlaw and, when Robert and his brother sense an opportunity to kill James, their murderous action elevates their target to near mythical status.

What's left behind the scenes

In 1863, while still a teenager, Jesse James lost part of his middle finger on his left hand, and this injury is revealed to the audience in one of the opening scenes of the film. In this and all subsequent scenes, the upper part of the corresponding finger of Brad Pitt, who played him, was carefully obscured using computer graphics.
The role of Robert Ford's brother, Charlie, was intended for Garrett Dylan, who was cast due to his physical resemblance to Casey Affleck. However, because the actor was busy with television projects, the decision had to be reconsidered; as a result, the role went to Sam Rockwell, and Dylan settled for the significantly smaller role of one of the gang members, Edward Miller.
The film is based on the novel "The Assassination Of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford" (1983) by Ron Hansen.
The town of Creed in Colorado, where a significant portion of the film's events take place, was recreated on a set costing $1 million.
