Short description
A prospector sells his wife and daughter to another gold miner for the rights to a gold mine. Twenty years later, the prospector is a wealthy man who owns much of the old west town named Kingdom Come. But changes are brewing and his past is coming back to haunt him. A surveyor and his crew scouts the town as a location for a new railroad line and a young woman suddenly appears in the town and is evidently the man's daughter.
What's left behind the scenes
- The film's official website was one of the first to cover the production process literally day by day, featuring relevant commentary, photos, and clips. It was the website visitors who were asked to choose a new title for the project after the American Film Association banned the use of the name 'Kingdom Come,' which belonged to another project already in development.
- The confrontation scene between the characters played by Peter Mullan and Wes Bentley in Milla Jovovich's character's bedroom had to be reshot many times after the primary filming period had ended. By that time, Bentley had already cut his hair for a role in another project and had to film wearing a wig that cost $10,000.
- Filming had to be suspended when director Michael Winterbottom suffered frostbite on his ears.
- The film was shot in the mountains of the Canadian province of Alberta, at an altitude of 2,440 meters above sea level. Filming took place near a popular ski resort, and snowboarders frequently zipped by, constantly wandering into the shot. The situation improved when the filmmakers announced their intention to restore the area to its original state after filming. They rejected the proposal to leave the Gold Rush-era town sets behind and burned everything down, as required by the script.
