What's left behind the scenes

Initially, it was intended that the Ryans would be wealthy Americans of Jewish descent, and the hatred toward them—resulting from a murder allegedly committed by their son—would be rooted in antisemitism. However, studio executives did not want to get involved in such matters and felt it would be foolish to have Liam Neeson play a Jew, so they decided to drop any mention of Jewish identity.
