Short description

Henri “Papillon” Charrière, a safecracker from the Parisian underworld, is wrongfully convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment in the penal colony of French Guiana, where he forges a strong friendship with Louis Dega, a counterfeiter who needs his protection.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The second adaptation of the autobiographical novel of the same name by former convict Henri Charrière, which was first published in France in 1969. The first adaptation was the 1973 film 'Papillon'.
  • Henri Charrière received his nickname due to a butterfly tattoo on his chest.
  • Filming of the escape from penal servitude took place in Montenegro, Serbia, and Malta. The real prison for particularly dangerous criminals where Henri Charrière served his sentence was located on Devil's Island in French Guiana. The prison was established by the government of Emperor Napoleon III in 1852, existed for 100 years, and was closed in 1952.
  • In preparation for filming, Charlie Hunnam lost 20 kilograms (from 84 kg to 64 kg), and during filming, he adhered to a diet as close as possible to the prison rations described in the book.
  • Tommy Flanagan and Charlie Hunnam previously starred together in the series "Sons of Anarchy".
  • Filming took place in Montenegro, Serbia, and Malta.
  • According to Joric van Wageningen (gaffer on Barrot), filming the prison scenes in Montenegro had to be regularly interrupted due to bad weather, when the set was literally sinking into mud from the downpours. He planned to dedicate two weeks to filming, but ended up stuck there for two months.
  • At the 47th minute, when Zhilo is executed, after the head is severed, the guillotine blade is clean, although blood should remain on it.
