Short description

Ukraine, 16th century. While the Poles dominate the Cossack steppes, Andrei, son of Taras Bulba, a Cossack leader, must choose between his love for his family and his folk and his passion for a Polish woman.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Burt Lancaster was originally intended to play the role of Andrei Bulba, and the script was written specifically for him. However, the role ultimately went to Tony Curtis.
  • During the filming of this movie, Tony Curtis (Andrei Bulba) met Christine Kaufmann (Polish noblewoman Natalia), and later married her.
  • There was a misunderstanding with hundreds of Argentine gauchos playing horsemen. They were informed in advance that horsemen who fell off their horses during the filming of the attack scene would receive extra money – but only if they were specifically instructed to fall. During the filming, two-thirds of the gauchos fell off their horses and all of them expected additional payment. Upon learning that no bonus was forthcoming, the gauchos threatened to strike. In the evening, Yul Brynner (1920-1985) visited their camp with a large number of steaks and spent several hours with them. The next day, the gauchos returned to the set.
