Short description
In eighteenth-century France, a girl is forced against her will to take vows as a nun. Three mothers superior treat her in radically different ways, ranging from maternal concern, to sadistic persecution, to lesbian desire.
What's left behind the scenes
- The film is based on the novel of the same name by Denis Diderot.
- Even during filming, attempts were repeatedly made to ban the film. Associations of parents of students from independent schools (APEL) collected tens of thousands of signatures on a petition against the film. In 1966, the French Minister of Culture banned the screening of “The Nun.” However, this did not prevent the film from passing the selection committee of the Cannes Film Festival. A paradoxical situation arose: in 1966, France was represented at the festival by a film banned in France itself. The ban was lifted a year later.
